A visit to Mumbai is incomplete without a visit to the Global Vipassana Pagoda. Sometimes with friends, sometimes solo I visited this place a couple of times. I stay in Mumbai city where pollution, noise, traffic has become a part of my everyday life.
Pagoda is one of such places to visit in Mumbai, which offer peace, calmness.
Sometimes pictures fail to capture the real beauty. It is 100 percent applicable to Pagoda. A place located at a few kilometers distance from Mumbai, so beautiful and stunning.
…..I could not resist myself and I clicked this picture just right after reaching there. I was so desperate to click this picture and is visible here as I did not notice that bus…….
I personally feel, the structure looks similar to Bangkok Temple and is a great tourist attraction in Mumbai. The place is spread over acres of land and surrounded by greenery, peaceful environment. The moment you enter in Global Vipassana Pagoda, you will notice a change in atmosphere.
The Global Vipassana Pagoda
The Global Vipassana Pagoda was built to create a platform for people to come and meditate together. People who visit pagoda get the opportunity to participate in a meditation sessions.
Vipassana, means to see things as they really are. Vipassana is one of India’s most ancient techniques of meditation. It was rediscovered by Gotama Buddha more than 2500 years ago.
I first time visited this place simply because I liked its pictures available on the internet. I had zero knowledge that its actually a meditation center.
…..for me its still hard to believe Pagoda is a part of Mumbai…
This place is filled with peace and serene which we hardly experience in our hectic life. Its clean and very well maintained.
HOW TO GET TO PAGODA – GORAI:
The Global Vipassana Pagoda is about an hour and a half drive from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport – Mumbai. There are two way to reach to Pagoda:
Ferry service is available from the Gorai creek. At the Gorai Creek, you will have to take a boat to the other side of the creek.
…Gorai Creek. Picture was taken on weekdays. On weekends dont be surprised to see more people…
..even for 10 minutes…..travelling in ferry is a different experience….
….ferry to Pagoda ( specifically the one goes to EsselWorld) looks like this from inside…again the picture was clicked on weekdays…
….for Esselworld ferry… I had paid 50 Rs ..round ticket..
While taking a ferry, there are two options: A ferry to Esselworld will cost a little more money. And there is local ferry service, which is much much cheaper. I would suggest to go for The Esselworld ferry as it drops at the point from where Pogoda is walk-able. The local ferry will drop you little far from the Pagoda.
Two wheeler: You can take your two wheelers in a local ferry. Once you get down at opposite side of the Gorai creek then it takes another 15 minutes to reach Pagoda. Free parking is available at Pagoda.

….thats me..it was my first motorcycle-ferry experience and its worth to remember..
…as you start approaching Pagoda this view it common….
…..this open parking space is right opposite to Pagoda…you can park two as well as four wheelers here…
Tip: While taking a ferry ticket and getting inside ferry, make it clear that you are here to visit Pagoda.
The Pagoda is about 42 km from the Domestic Airport Terminal.
Hiring a car / Rickshaws to Global Vipassana Pagoda:
Private taxis , ola/uber or auto rickshaws (tuk-tuk) can be hired to reach Pagoda. Rates may vary. If you plan to come by your own vehicle then check the google maps in advance to avoid possible Mumbai traffic.
From Borivali Railway station:
Borivali is the nearest railway station. From Borivali station one can take a bus/rickshaws to Pagoda. Another way is take auto rickshaw to Gorai Creek. From Gorai jetty, take a ferry which goes to Esselwrold.
Whichever route you may choose, the tower of the pagoda can be seen from far, shinning beautifully in between the green fields.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON REACHING PAGODA:
The architecture of Global Vipassana Pagoda is bound to mesmerize you. The place is very vast and if you wish to explore it properly then you may need to walk a lot.
I always visit this place on weekdays to avoid crowd. This place is becoming one of the tourist places in mumbai. Every day so many people visit this holy place. Proper provisions are made for their comfort. Facilities like food court, drinking water and washrooms are present within the complex.
Let me share some pictures with you.
….this giant bell..actually I dont know who these ladies are..they happened to come in my picture somehow…
..the bell has some real weight :)….
….this is when I came on my motorcycle..
…advantage of visiting on weekdays…no crowd..free space…
The center of this Pagoda contains the world’s largest stone dome built without any supporting pillars with the dome height being approximately 29 meters – which makes it a must watch.
The large meditation hall at the centre of this domed structure can accommodate 8000 people at a time. Other main attractions include the stunning Myanmar Gate , a tall beautiful marble statue of Buddha, the Bell Tower.
As you start climb the stairs, you will need to go from the security check hall. Professional cameras, tripods are not allowed. In case if you are carrying it, then you will need to submit it at the security check. You can collect it while returning home.
Photography is prohibited inside the main dome and the visitor’s gallery of this complex. However, visitors can click pictures outside the domed structure and the remaining premises of the pagoda.
…though this picture is not great..but its a great spot to pause for nice Instagram pictures..
…this one is a small food court..one more big cafeteria is available in other side of Pagoda….
The food court serves vegetarian food like South Indian, Maharashtrian street food, sandwiches, main course, beverages and desserts. During my visits, I tried sandwiches which I found not delicious but good in taste.
…i tried this grill sandwich..
…when you get nice background…you gotta pose…
…proper directions are provided whenever necessary…

- Keep a day aside to have a relaxed trip.
- The food court here will serve you non spicy sattvic food. So do not keep high expectations or else you can carry your own food.
- If you belive in Mediation or Spirituality then you will be able to enjoy your visit more. This is not like other tourist places in mumbai. One can not make noise here.

Every time I visit this place, the environment gives a positive, calm and happy feeling. I am happy that it is good, this place is not promoted well. Due to this many of the locals/tourists are not aware of this place. Less tourists more calmness 🙂
